The fuel filler cap is fitted with two valves which enable the following if the multi-function valve fails:
– they ventilate the tank if a vacuum is created
– they bleed fuel fumes if excessive pressure is created in the tank.
Tank ventilation
If a vacuum exceeding a pre-set threshold is created in the tank, it operates plate (1) and pulls backward the overcoming spring (2).
This allows tank ventilation via the round sections created between plate (1) and seal (3).
Fuel fume bleeding When the pressure of fuel fumes on plate (4) exceeds a pre-set value, spring (5) load is overcome.
This opens a round section between plate (4) and seal (3).
This pump is equipped with a plastic impeller designed for petrol with or without ethylene.
A no return valve (3) and an overpressure valve set to 2.6 bar (2) are located inside the tank.
The pump is directly powered by the ECU as to:
– stop operation in the event of engine ratio falling under a pre-set threshold
– time ( 15 seconds) its operation whenever the key is turned to MAR
– enable operation during movement or when the engine is running.
A steel ball (1) is fitted in a conic seat (2). It is normally held in position by a magnet.
With certain specific acceleration loads, the ball is freed from the magnetic attraction and gradually moves upwards out of its conical seat according to the angle of the cone.
A fast release mechanism (3) is located over the ball. This usually creates a normally closed (NC) electric circuit.
When the mechanism is hit by the ball it shifts the NC circuit to normally open (NO) thus cutting the fuel pump earth circuit.
The inertia switch can be restored by pressing the button covered by a flexible guard (4).
Note: If even after a slight crash you can smell fuel or if you notice leakages from the fuel feed system to not reset the inertia switch.
Seek the cause of the problem and solve it before resetting the switch to avoid the risk of fire.
When the engine is off, the sensor membrane bends according to the atmospheric pressure.
When the key is inserted it provides the ECU information on the altitude.
When the engine is started, the vacuum in the intake manifold acts on the sensor membrane via the connection pipe. The membrane bends and this varies the resistance value.
As the sensor is powered at constant voltage (5 Volt) by the ECU, varying the resistance also varies the output voltage according to the diagram shown in the illustration.
This signal provides the ECU initial data on the amount of intake air.
