5 Things to Consider when Seeking Addiction Treatment

April 20, 2017 - By

Drug addiction can be a frightening experience, and so can addiction treatment. Knowing what to expect can make it easier to undergo treatment.

When you’ve made the decision that it’s time to seek treatment, consider these five things to have the highest chance of success:

  1. Treatment requires addressing physical, mental, and emotional disorders at the same time.
  2. Longer treatment programs yield greater success.
  3. What coverage does the patient’s health insurance cover?
  4. Which rehab center will you select for treatment?
  5. What is your support plan to stay sober?

To understand more about each of the above considerations, let’s discuss each one in more depth.

Treating More than the Physical

Addiction can be caused by and can cause, emotional and mental disorders and concerns that can be just as serious as physical problems.

If you just treat the drug addiction, you’re just putting a bandaid on the problem instead of actually treating it. Treating just one drug addiction can have the same effect.

For example, drug addiction can cause depression, which can, in turn, cause drug addiction. If you only treat the physical addiction but not the depression, the patient’s chance of relapse can be higher.

Let’s look at another example. Say you treat someone for heroin addiction but they’re also addicted to pain killers. You haven’t treated them; you’ve just removed one drug from the equation, and most likely they will relapse with the heroin.

Over 90% of heroin users also use at least one other drug.

Successful treatment treats the person, not only the physical addiction.

The Longer the Treatment, the Better

Research shows that treatment programs that are longer than 30 days yield an 84% chance of success. Programs that run less than 30 days typically offer almost 30% less success.

That’s because longer programs treat more than the physical addiction. Treating mental and emotional disorders and concerns takes longer.

Insurance Coverage

It’s hard to think of treatment in terms of affordability and insurance coverage. Insurance companies don’t always believe in the aforementioned information.

However, for many patients, the cost of treatment is a concern. It can prevent someone from seeking treatment. Knowing which treatments are affordable can help you choose.

Not all programs cost the same and some insurance policies do offer coverage.

The Rehab Center

Much goes into deciding which rehab center is right for a patient. Learn about more than one rehab center. That way, you or your loved one can choose from several options.

The length of treatment, methods, and cost will all factor into this choice.

Staying Sober

Sobriety requires continuing support, even after treatment is “complete.” For that reason, knowing what some of your options are post-treatment can help settle concerns that a patient will relapse as soon as the treatment program ends.

Support comes in a variety of forms, including groups like Narcotics Anonymous. Before choosing a treatment plan, draft a post-treatment plan.

Congratulations are in order–choosing to seek treatment is the first step toward sobriety. By following this guide, you can find the right treatment program for you or your loved one.

7 Bedtime Snacks That Encourage Weight Loss

Ever find yourself trying to sleep with a grumbling tummy, but resisting the urge to get up for a snack because you think it’s going to unravel your whole day of healthy eating?

Well, we’ve got some good news for your tummy! Eating a snack before bed can actually encourage weight loss- as long as it’s a snack that’s nutrient dense and low energy.

How so?

As it turns out, scientists have discovered there’s a link between poor sleep quality and weight gain.

In fact, sleep is the most important factor to take into account if you want a better body. A bad night’s rest can lead to negative changes in your fat cells, unhealthy food cravings, and an unproductive gym session.

So, instead of tossing and turning while trying to ignore your tummy’s calls, you need to get out of bed and grab a snack.

But which snacks should you be reaching for?

Let’s take a look at the top seven bedtime snacks that actually help promote weight loss!

1. Nonfat Greek Yogurt

A small cup of nonfat greek yogurt comes in at about only 100 to 150 calories, and packs a serious protein punch of up to 20 grams!

Even better, it contains a magical little thing called tryptophan– a chemical that helps induce drowsiness.

Yogurt is also a great way to calm your stomach, helping keep indigestion and heartburn at bay.

2. Banana

Bananas also contain that natural sleeping pill known as tryptophan.

What’s more, there’s no clean up involved with eating a banana as it doesn’t involve any utensils.

Not to mention, there a great snack for those who have a sweet tooth that needs satisfying!

3. White Meat Turkey

Remember how tired you get on Thanksgiving? Turns out, your annoying in-laws aren’t to blame- turkey is perhaps the king of foods when it comes to tryptophan.

Just make sure you pick the white kind to ensure it’s low fat and contains high-quality protein.

4. Apple and Peanut Butter

Scoop out a spoonful of peanut butter and slice up some apples for a winning weight loss combination.

Apples are packed with fiber- a nutrient that helps keep you full, and the protein contained in peanut butter is just enough to fill you up without weighing you down.

5. Oatmeal

You may think of oats as solely a breakfast food, but they’re also ideal at bedtime.

Oatmeal contains a winning combination of protein, fiber, and carbohydrates, plus it’s a natural source of melatonin- a hormone that helps regulate sleep and wake cycles.

6. Cottage Cheese

If you’re someone who loves winding down with a cool treat before bed, cottage cheese is the perfect healthy snack swap for ice cream.

Its protein will fill you up in just the right way while its calcium while help lull you to sleep.

For an added health kick, top it with some unsalted almonds or berries.

7. Lavender Tea

Why not sip your snack instead?

Lavender tea is a natural sleep promoter and it helps you feel relaxed and calm- just make sure to go for the decaffeinated kind.

Combine these healthy snacks with a garcinia cambogia weight loss supplement and you’ll be well on your way to a better body.

Which one of these snacks are you most excited to try? Let us know in the comments!

5 Things to Keep in Mind When Using an Online Pharmacy

March 8, 2017 - By
Canadian Pharmacy

Sometimes we just wish to have things we want materialize before our eyes. While a Jetsons world isn’t yet realized, we do have ways to bring what we want directly to our doorstep without every leaving our house.

Today you can order pretty much everything online. Your clothes, your toiletries, your groceries and even your pets. But one of the most helpful advances in online ordering is the Canadian online pharmacy.

But there are things you always need to know when using an online pharmacy.

1. Know What A Legitimate Online Pharmacy Is

There are legitimate and illegitimate online pharmacies. And it’s important to know the difference so that you end up with tested and approved versions of your medication.

Don’t use an online pharmacy if they do any of these things:

  • Don’t require a prescription for prescription drugs
  • Don’t have contact information that connects to a real person or location
  • Can’t produce a license or don’t use licensed pharmacies
  • Sell fake medication
  • Don’t follow health privacy standards

You can also check a pharmacy’s legitimacy at

2. Why Online Pharmacies Can Be Cheaper

Just because it’s cheaper doesn’t make it less quality. The great thing about doing business online is that you don’t have to have a chain of physical locations. You can operate out of one location and ship from there.

This eliminates overhead. Overhead is the cost of running a store with employees and security and electricity and building or rent costs. All of these have to be made up in sales. Eliminate these costs and sales prices go down.

3. Other Countries’ Online Pharmacy Laws Are Lax

Regulations in countries outside the U.S. and Canada may not have as strict of regulations on drug quality. U.S. Federal agents seized $73 million counterfeit drugs in 2014. And that’s only about 10% of the pharmaceutical black market.

This is why you need to use legitimate, licensed pharmacies in the US and Canada.

4. Order Your Medications Early

Online orders ship fast. But it’s not the same as going down to your local pharmacy and just picking up your medication. You won’t be able to take your medication the same day you order it.

Depending on where you live it can take longer to get your medication. If you are taking a vital medication order at least five days ahead of the time you will run out. This way you will not miss a dose of your vital medication.

5. You Can Order Your Pet’s Medication Online

Did you know that your pets use the same pharmacy as you do? Of course, you have to go pick it up for them. But your veterinarian can prescribe to your online pharmacy as well as your regular pharmacy.

This could save you a lot of money on your pet’s medication and it will save you the hassle of having to drive down to the pharmacy just for your Fido’s pills.

The Bottom Line

There are very few disadvantages to getting your prescriptions online. You really do save more time and money.

What are some benefits you’ve seen with online pharmacies? Let us know in the comments below.

Everything You Need to Know to Buy Hearing Aids

February 9, 2017 - By
Hearing Aids

Listen closely–if you’re older than age 45, there’s a good chance you suffer from some sort of hearing loss (actually, a one in five chance, to be exact).

Buying hearing aids can be a tricky task. But we’re here to help.

Keep reading to figure out everything you need to know before choosing the type of hearing aid for you.

The 5 Types Of Hearing Aids: Pros & Cons

The right type of hearing aid for you depends on several factors. When looking into hearing aids, consider the severity of your hearing loss, your lifestyle, and your manual dexterity.

Hearing aids are categorized by where on the ear they are worn. Additionally, they can be classified by the number of pieces: behind-the-ear hearing aids are two pieces, while an in-the-ear hearing aid is one piece.

Quick Tip: Keep in mind that smaller aids offer fewer features and might be more difficult to manipulate.

1. Behind-the-Ear Hearing Aid

For this kind of hearing aid, the receiver located is inside of the ear canal.

It’s attached to the ear using a custom-made ear mold, which will fit snugly in the ear. Or, a “dome style” or non-custom canal piece may be used.

  • Comfortable
  • Barely visible
  • Prevents a feeling of being plugged-up
  • Easy to insert
  • Compatible with phones

  • Wax and moister may limit the life of the receiver
  • Doe not allow for significant amplification in low frequencies
  • Limited in terms of the potential to add amplification

2. Standard Tube or Thin Tube Behind-the-Ear Hearing Aid

Also called reciever in the aid (RITA).

  • Provides considerable low-and high-frequency amplification
  • Good for people with moderately severe to severe hearing loss who require considerable amplification across many frequencies
  • Controls are easy to manipulate (on larger models)
  • Telecoil mode is easily selected and used (on larger models)
  • Ear mold can easily be cleaned
  • Accommodates larger batteries

  • Custom mold tends to be visible
  • Vulnerable to sweat and wax buildup
  • A plugged-up feeling from ear mold can occur unless vented

3. Completely-in-the-Canal Hearing Aid

  • Does not need a telecoil
  • Has low visibility
  • Easy to insert and remove
  • Insensitive to wind noise

  • Too small to include a directional microphone
  • A plugged-up feeling can occur unless vented
  • Vulnerable to wax and moisture
  • Can be difficult to control (because the receiver is in the ear canal)
  • Can only accommodate a small battery (therefore, battery life is relatively short)
  • Batteries can be more difficult to insert and remove

4. In-the-Canal Hearing Aid

  • Barely visible
  • Easy to insert
  • Can build up volume to increase ease of use
  • Larger units can include directional microphones

  • Telecoil selector switch makes manipulation more difficult
  • Too small to include a directional microphone
  • A plugged-up feeling can occur unless vented
  • Vulnerable to wax and moisture
  • Can be difficult to control (because the receiver is in the ear canal)
  • Can only accommodate a small battery (therefore, battery life is relatively short)
  • Batteries can be more difficult to insert and remove

5. In-the-Ear Hearing Aid

  • More room for features such as telecoil, directional microphone, and volume control
  • Less of a plugged-up feeling when vented
  • Relatively easy to insert

  • More visible
  • Vulnerable to wax build-up and moisture

Which Hearing Aid Type is The Right Fit For You

February 2, 2017 - By
hearing aids

It’s a sad fact of life that hearing loss affects many of us, especially as we grow older. The good news is that new technology is delivering advanced hearing aids and hearing solutions every day.

It’s estimated that around 28.8 million adults in the US could benefit from hearing aids. Yet only 30% of people aged over 70, who experience hearing difficulties, have ever used them. Why is that?

The most likely scenario is that people are unsure what type of device to choose, or they don’t realize what a huge difference having a hearing aid can make to their life.

Many Different Hearing Solutions

It may even be that they purchased hearing aids from a non-specialist vendor and didn’t get the results they hoped for. And there’s a good explanation for that.

There are many different reasons why hearing loss could be occurring, and many different hearing solutions, including surgery. The only way to truly pinpoint and treat the problem is by having a full medical workup of hearing loss.

Only by undergoing a comprehensive diagnostic hearing evaluation can you make an informed choice on which hearing aid type is the right fit for you.

New Technology Brings New Choices

Of course, this choice is affected by other factors, too. For example, age. It’s not just older people who suffer from hearing loss.

Around two to three out of every 1000 children born in the US have hearing problems. And around 15% of Americans aged 18 and over report trouble hearing. So you see there is no one-size-fits-all device when it comes to hearing aids and hearing solutions.

With new technology comes many more choices. And while this is a good thing for the patient, it can make it a little confusing when choosing your device. For example, do you go for an ITC, a CIC, ITE or BTE?

Matching The Solution to Your Lifestyle

Let’s cover that in a little more detail. As mysterious as those all sound, it simply describes whether the hearing aid is fitted into the ear canal itself, into the ear, or behind the ear.

Your choice is determined by the type and level of hearing difficulty you have, your age, your lifestyle, and many other factors.

An ITC – or In-the-Canal device is extremely small, and can offer both hearing and cosmetic advantages. ITEs (In-the-Ear) are a little bigger and might be easier to use. BTEs (Behind-the-Ear) are ideal for children.

Switching From Analog to Digital

In addition, there are hearing aids that use special receivers, and hearing solutions that can be implanted. In short, there are many different solutions to cover many different hearing loss scenarios.

If you are experiencing hearing difficulties, or you are using an old style analog hearing aid, it’s probably time to schedule an appointment with a professional audiologist. Imagine, your whole life could improve by simply switching to a digital hearing aid.

Make That Call Today

These days, the gift of hearing is available to the majority of those suffering hearing difficulties. There are hearing aids and hearing solutions to suit all budgets and conditions, so why continue to suffer in silence?

Just one phone call could have you living life to the full again, in just a matter of days or weeks.

Looking for a New E-Liquid Flavor to Try? Look no More!

January 31, 2017 - By
E Liquid Manufacturing

We get it.

Vaping has been around for a minute and you’re looking for something.

But how can you pick?

So many flavors, from basic to complex, there’s a ton to choose from.

But, sit back and relax, we’re going to help you figure out what to try next.

Breaking it down

Just like there are a ton of flavors, there are a ton of places to choose from.

From the shop at the mall to sites online, there’s a lot going on in E liquid manufacturing.

We’re not here to get into those details, you’re looking for flavors.

So let’s get started.

There’s pretty much an E liquid flavor for every fruit under the sun.

And a few we’re pretty sure were made up.

You name it, it’s likely been made.

One of the top choices for fruit flavors is the combo of strawberries and cream.

Beyond strawberries, you can find mango, banana, honeydew.

And most every brand offers a version of the basics: grape, cherry.

Some of the more subtle fruits, like honeydew, can be more versatile.

After fruits, dessert-based flavors can be tasty.

Everything from cake to pie and all the desserts in between.

Smurf Cake is an actual thing, a combo of wild blueberries and cheesecake.

Some even say that it has hints of the graham cracker crust.

Or you can go all out with vanilla custard with hints of bourbon.

And don’t forget chocolate and caramel, but those may be a little too sweet for some.

Some companies offer sample boxes, so you can try a few flavors.

If not, make sure you buy the smallest bottle to start – it’s no fun if it’s a flavor you don’t like.

Maybe you’ve switched to vape to quit smoking regular cigarettes.

But you’re really not into sweet things and you miss the taste of tobacco.

You’re in luck!

There are several brands that feature tobacco in their line-up.

Some do feature sweet flavors like caramel, too, so read up before you buy.

If you like regular cigarettes such as Newports, you can still find that taste.

You can choose from flavors like menthol or even mint and chocolate.

You can mix the fruity and minty, combining sweet and sour berries, with mint. Definitely a unique taste.

ADVs (or All Day Vapes)

Just like you wouldn’t eat the same meal 3 times a day, the same vape might not work for you, either.

(And if you do eat the same thing all the time, we won’t judge – but we want to know what it is!)

Some might be too sweet, or too boring, to last you from morning til night.

Types of flavors that will go the distance tend to be a little softer and less intense.

There’s enough flavor to stay interesting, but you won’t have tongue fatigue later.

Strawberries and cream combos seem to have staying power, at least according to the lists we’ve read.

It’s your choice

Whatever flavor you like, make sure you know what’s in your vape.

There are lots of places that do E liquid manufacturing.

Pick the right one that fits your tastes and budget.

You Can Expect These 4 Things in Alcohol Treatment

January 5, 2017 - By
drug and alcohol addiction

If you’re reading this, congratulations.

You have taken a very important step toward recovering from alcohol dependence.

Typically, people don’t take any step at all.

They are afraid of what treatment will be like.

They are afraid they’ll never be able to stop their addiction.

That’s understandable.

Even so, 88,000 people die every year from alcohol-related causes.

That’s a startling number, a number which, in part, is attributable to someone’s decision not to take any step at all.

If this is your first time considering alcohol treatment, you may have some questions about starting treatment.

This article will explain some of the common misconceptions people have about starting treatment, as well as what they can expect when they start.

1) This will be your choice

Alcohol treatment is completely voluntarily.

During treatment, medical experts and counselors that are assigned to you will not pressure you to start nor complete this process.

Therefore, what you get out of the program will be entirely up to you.

2) Detox

Detox is a vital step toward alcohol recovery, as it cleanses your body from alcohol and other harmful chemicals.

What’s most important for you to know is that detox safely prevents you from having physical withdrawal symptoms, which can kill you.

At first, detox will be unpleasant for you, but detox is a vital step toward becoming free of alcohol addiction.

Detox usually lasts anywhere between 5-7 days.

What detox is like

The first few days of detox will be hard. But medical professionals and therapists will be there with you to help you in this process.

To counteract the unpleasant sensations you will feel during the first few days, you will be giving meds to help in your recovery.

3) Professional staffing

It’s common to see alcoholics in denial of their addictions. They may even feel ambivalent about their addictions.

The good thing is that you will be supported by a caring team of medical professionals and counselors who want to see you beat your addiction, and overcome any psychological obstacles you may have.

You will have one-to-one meetings with a professional counselor who will guide you in your journey toward alcohol freedom.

If your health has suffered because of your addiction, our doctors will give you the proper nutrition and supplementation you need to help you recover quicker.

Education is the cornerstone of every successful rehab center.

You will learn the root causes of your addiction and how the nature of alcohol can prevent you from finally putting this addiction behind you.

Most treatment centers (like Prescott House Alcohol Treatment Center, for instance), incorporate the 12-step program to treat alcohol dependence.

Coping skills

The goal of any rehab program is to give you the power to clearly look at your life in view of your addiction and the psychological triggers causing you to drink.

Armed with these tools, you will be able to manage your life and your urges responsively.

4) Meet great people

You will discuss your struggles with a team of licensed professionals who will help you get your life back on track.

You will also meet others in your situation who can provide support during your recovery.

Are you ready to take control of your life?

Undoubtedly, you will experience changes and unwanted feelings during your treatment. But things will get easier as you learn how to cope with your old habits.

If you’d like to begin treatment or have any questions, leave your comments below.

Is CBD Oil an Effective Anxiety Treatment?

December 22, 2016 - By

Anxiety can be all-encompassing, and those suffering are constantly searching for a way out. Is CBD oil an answer? We’re sharing what you need to know here.

Anxiety is hard to deal with, isn’t it?

If you’re dealing with anxiety on a daily basis, you know how much of a challenge it can be.

You go through your day like normal. You go to work. You complete your assignments.

Then…it happens.

A sudden sense of terror or worry. Your heart beats faster and faster. You become sweaty. You wonder if you’re having a panic attack.

And you have no idea why it’s happening.

You’re not alone. As a matter of fact, about 40 million adults suffer from anxiety disorders each year.

You may think it’s impossible to find a solution. But what if it wasn’t?

People have tried numerous remedies. Some work, some don’t. But there are alternatives.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one such alternative. It’s been proven to help mitigate the effects of anxiety. This post will discus the impact of anxiety and how CBD can help.

What Is Anxiety?

So what exactly is anxiety? We hear this word often, but many people don’t know the actual definition of the word.

Anxiety itself is actually a good thing. It prevents us from entering into dangerous situations. It can push us to work harder. But when anxiety is experienced more than normal, it can have seriously negative effects.

For the purposes of this post, when I refer to anxiety, I’m referring to Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder is different from the “normal” type of anxiety we feel when we’re dealing with a stressful situation. It’s an unrealistic and excessive fear that comes about even when there’s no reasonable cause for it. It’s a serious mental illness that can interfere with your daily life.

Anxiety is characterized by intense feelings of worry and fear that are constant. These feelings can become overwhelming and in some cases, disabling. When you experience episodes every day, it can restrict you from performing your normal daily tasks.

However, anxiety disorder does not have to have a debilitating effect on your life. If you can recognize the signs, you can seek treatment and get it under control

There are different types of anxiety disorder:

  • Panic disorder: You have sudden feelings of terror that come without any apparent trigger. You might experience chest pain, palpitations, and sweating. It causes you to feel as if you’re having a heart attack.
  • Social anxiety disorder: You feel a sharp sense of worry and fear in normal social situations.
  • Specific phobias: You experience intense fear of a particular situation or object. The fear you experience is greater than the normal amount of fear one may have in the same situation.

The causes of generalized anxiety disorder are not fully understood. There could be many different factors that cause it. There are studies that show that genetics and family history could be a contributor. Other potential causes are brain chemistry and environmental triggers.

Nobody experience anxiety the exact same way. There are numerous symptoms that a person can experience.

These include:

  • Unreasonable feelings of panic.
  • Fear.
  • Uneasiness.
  • Inability to be still.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Numbness and tingling.
  • Muscle tension.
  • Dizziness.

If you find that you experience any of these symptoms on a regular basis, it’s possible you could be dealing with an anxiety disorder.

What Are Its Affects?

The potential impacts of generalized anxiety disorder are numerous. It can have a detrimental effect on your everyday life. When you’re experiencing the symptoms listed above on a regular basis, it can prevent you from functioning in a healthy way.

It can keep you from doing your work efficiently. It can make it more difficult to perform well in school. It can hamper your ability to enjoy social activities. It can put a strain on your relationships.

Depending on the severity of the disorder, it can cause the person to become incapacitated when they’re having an episode.

Constant anxiety attacks are often accompanied by unhealthy self-medicating behaviors.

These include:

  • Drug abuse.
  • Anorexia nervosa.
  • Bulimia.
  • Self-mutilation.

When a person resorts to self-medicating in order to deal with the anxiety, it can make the problem worse. The negative consequences of self-medicating can actually cause the person to feel more anxiety in the long run.

Fortunately, there are ways to treat anxiety. Therapy and medication are the two most common ways to help you mitigate the symptoms of anxiety. One such treatment is Cannabidiol.

What Is CBD?

Cannabidiol is a phytocannabinoid. It’s a subclass of cannabinoids derived from hemp plants. In the 19th century, hemp plants were used as a source of fiber. It was used to make seed oil. Hemp is the biggest source of commercial CBD extracts.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a cannabis compound that can be used to treat a variety of health issues. Contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t make you feel “high.” It’s a non-psychoactive medication, which means it does not affect your mind or mental state. CBD is most commonly used by people who want to alleviate pain, psychosis, seizures, spasms, anxiety, and other harmful conditions.

There has been much research done on the effects of CBD. It has been found to be an effective treatment for many different health issues.

These include:

  • Diabetes.
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Schizophrenia.
  • Epilepsy.
  • Depression.
  • Alcoholism.
  • Arthritis.

As you can see, CBD has many uses. It can greatly help those who suffer from generalized anxiety disorder.

CBD As A Treatment

In your brain, you have cannabinoid receptors. These receptors are responsible for synthesizing and cannabinoids. They are located in the part of the brain that control emotional behavior.

This part of the brain controls:

  • Mood.
  • Stress.
  • Irritability.
  • Fear.
  • Craving.
  • Sleep.

This is the part of the brain that cannabidiol affects. When these receptors are activated, it lowers your heart rate. It also reduces anxiety and panic. It suppresses the “fight or flight” response that we have when we have an anxiety episode.

In one study, researchers looked at the effects of CBD on stress. In order to make its subject feel stress, they had them perform a simulated public speaking test. A small dose of CBD was shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety. Later studies showed that CBD created a marked decrease in cognitive impairment and speech performance.
