These days, some would say that blogs are the wave of the future. Whether that’s true or not is debatable, but it can’t be said that blogs don’t offer some advantages.

Blogging is a great way to get your writing, your knowledge and your name out there. The problem is that there are a lot of ways to approach this task, and not all of them are worth it.

This is where a service called Blogger comes in. It’s a totally free website dedicated to letting people blog. Plus, a good blog can net you a decent amount of money.

So, how does it work? How do I add my name to the growing list of blogs on Blogger? How do I turn my blog into a business? All of this and more will be explained below.

Have a Plan

This one may seem like an obvious bit of advice, but it still bears mentioning. For a blog to gain any sort of traction, it has to be about something, namely something the writer knows about or is eager to learn about.

The first question you should ask yourself is what do you bring to the table? Is there anything you consider yourself knowledgeable in that others might want to read about?

Can you think of something new to write about fairly regularly? If the answer to both of these questions is yes, then you’re ready to start a blog.

If you answered no, don’t worry. It doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t start a blog, just that you might want to put more thought into it.

If you’re having trouble coming up with something to write about, there are a lot of resources out there that can give you some suggestions.

Getting Started

Once you have your idea down, the next step is to get started on actually creating your blog. When working with Blogger, this is easy.

The first thing you’re going to need is a Google email and password. If you don’t already have one, you shouldn’t worry because they’re fairly easy to make.

This is important, because once you get to Blogger, the first step is to sign in. To do this, you’ll need to enter your Google username and password.

The next part of setting up is to decide on a name for your blog. This can be tough, because there are a lot of blogs out there, and therefore a lot of names are taken. The good news is that the site will point this out to you, so you’re bound to end up with an original name in the end.

The last essential step for setting everything up is to choose a theme. This is the background and structure that a blog will have as you write it. More than anything, it’s a personal preference, and it can be changed at any time.

On the Subject of Domains

When it comes to domains, you have two options. You can either start your blog on the standard sub-domain, which is free, but makes your blog less distinct.

An official domain, on the other hand, will cost a certain amount of money per month, but will give your blog its own web address, which can help it to stand out from the crowd.

You may want to start with a sub-domain now and upgrade later, which is definitely an option. This allows you to build up more of a following before buying a domain.

Conversely, you could start with an official domain, just to see if it’s right for you, and cancel if it’s not. This is also a good idea, because it allows you to test the waters before making any permanent decisions.

The First Post

This is it, the inaugural post, the one that sets the pace and direction for the rest of the blog. First and foremost, this first entry, and every entry after it, will need to have a title.

Also, you may want to preview the document every once in a while. Don’t worry, because nothing gets published until you click the button to publish it. Previewing the post just shows what it would look like if you decided to publish it in its current state.

The great thing about this is, if you don’t like the way things are looking right now, you can always change some of the settings and preview it again without publishing anything.

As for the content of your first post, you probably shouldn’t jump right in. It’d be a bit confusing if you decided to write about and only about your topic on your first post.

For instance, maybe your blog is about redecorating a house. As interesting a subject as that is, people might lose interest if they don’t know who you are and why this subject is so important to you.

If we don’t know anything about you, why are we supposed to care about what you’re saying?

Adsense and Earnings

Now we come to the subject of monetizing your bog. The main way that blogs make money is through ad revenue.

Essentially, if your blog is popular enough, various companies, often those who sell related products or services, will pay to advertise on your blog. There are a few different ways to do this, but they all essentially boil down to some form of advertising.

Sometimes, you endorse the product on the blog itself. Other times, a major company decides which ads to put on your blog. This latter is the one you’ll most likely be dealing with if you start a blog on Blogger.

Keep in mind, this may not happen immediately. In the beginning, before you have that many readers, you won’t get paid much, if at all, for ad revenue. After all, if not too many people see your blog then very few will be able to engage with the ads.

Be a Part of the Community

It is a well-known fact that businesses are looked on far more favorably if the staff and owners interact with their customers. While a blog doesn’t necessarily foster a business/consumer relationship, this rule still applies.

One thing you’ll want to do is create a profile. Tell people a little about yourself, and maybe include a picture and links to your social media accounts.

From then on, it’s just a question of engaging. Respond to comments, make suggestions for people who have questions, reach out to other blogs to congratulate them on great posts or even collaborate with them. Basically, don’t be afraid of your audience and fellow bloggers.

Sure, the internet being what it is, you’re going to find a troll every now and then, but most people are legitimately interested in being a part of what you’re doing and helping to keep it going.

Sure, some of them are going to ask questions you don’t know the answer to or offer suggestions that you don’t think will help. Be honest, but polite. Tell them you don’t honestly know the answer, and maybe do a few searches to see if you can find out.

If you don’t think their suggestion will work, just explain the situation. It’s nothing personal, it’s just that some tactics don’t work in certain situations.

One of the best ways to engage with your readers is to ask them what their opinion is on the blog, and what topics they’d be interested in seeing in the future. Readers tend to be highly responsive if they’re made part of the process.

Create Blogs on Blogger

There are a lot of blogs on Blogger, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth starting one yourself. Blogs are a great way to establish yourself as a source of information and to potentially make money while doing it.

Blogging isn’t necessarily easy, though, and there are a lot of steps to making a successful blog. The natural starting point is knowing what the subject of your blog will be. After setting things up, you are ready to bang out your first blog.

This isn’t all, though. If you want to make any money on your blog, you’ll need to sign up for Google Adsense and try to engage with the community.

There’s a lot more than this to tell, though, and a lot of it will be addressed in our new blog.
